47: What my boyfriend thinks of me travelling

January 24, 2019

Have you ever thought about what your boyfriend or loved ones think about you travelling? Nope me neither.

This episode is a recorded conversation between my boyfriend and I, on what he really thinks about me booking travel and just leaving the country at very short notice.

I've never really considered what my family and close friends think of me just leaving, and only telling them when I've left and I'm in the world.

I'm a solo female traveller who travels the world very freely. But after this honest conversation, I've changed how I approach my travel planning...

If you have a boyfriend or loved one that you're very close too, this may give you an insight into what they're thinking.

This episode was recorded in a noisy cafe, so apologies for all the background noise.

This episode is about;

My main reason for travel this year

This year is the first time that I've planned my travel goals so far in advanced and been this organised. I'm also changing my travel style this year as I’m travelling with my boyfriend. This will be the first time in 5 years, that I've travelled with a partner, so it’s going to be a challenge.

My mini travel goals this year as travelling to London, Dublin and a spontaneous trip to another country in Europe.

I’m still continuing with my long term goal of learning Spanish, in preparation of my travel plans of travelling Central America in 2020.

Gal Pal Travel Planning Bootcamp – help you plan your personalised travel itinerary

How to get started now;

Think about a destination that’s far away (long haul) – where would that be for you?

Then have some mini trips that are closed to your home

Take some time to think about where you really want to be this year

Pick somewhere that you’d really like to go. Or something you would really like to dos

I’m at the beginning of 2019 right now, wouldn’t it be great if ___________________ by the end of 2019.

By the end of 2019, I  _____________________________.

This episode is about:

Answering the question 'How to know if travelling is right for you?'
Travelling is right for everyone – Travelling is what you make of it.

Find out your travelling style

My travel style is a short term planner and going with the flow
Since I started travelling, so many and exciting opportunities have come to me

Travel is 100% about self-discovery

I learnt I’m really confident
I learnt that people liked me – this was a really silly belief that I had before I went travelling
I learnt to be really independent – I am the youngest child and was always
When I first went travelling it was so scary. But within a few days I became confident

Finding you style and what makes you feel good and what travelling means to you, that is what travelling is.

Self-discovery starts in the planning stages

Decide what type of traveller you want to be
Know what you like and don’t like
Remember you are on a journey. A journey of self-discovery

What to do on the plane that stops you getting jet lag

Adapt to the time zone that you’re flying too
Eat the foods in relation to the country you are flying to
Change your time as soon as possible to the destination you are flying to

Eat light food the entire journey – I try to avoid carbs or limit the amount I eat
No caffeine
Keep the biscuits / nut / cracker packs to have them later on in the flight
Relax, just chill and rest

I was able to adjust back to my life in the UK very quickly and not suffer from jet lag

I’m an experienced traveller and I’m confident in my ability to travel. But this doesn’t mean I get everything right all the time.

I made a massive mistake with booking my return flight home from Japan, and managed to book the wrong airport...the actual airport was 214 miles away!

I had to think on my feet, change my plans to adapt and keep moving forward. But knowing that everything works out in the end is a huge comfort!

My trip to Japan – booked and was flying within a week of making a decision to go

Listen to episode 35 – being spontaneous and travelling to Japan

I had a niggly feeling when planning my trip but ignored it.
When I booked my flights, I accidentally booked the wrong airport returning from Japan
The airport I’d booked wasn’t even in the same area, it was actually 214 miles away (345km)
I didn’t discover my mistake until 3 days before I was leaving the country – luckily for me

Managed to tick some things of my “list” that I had for Japan
Found a fruit that only exists in Japan and had a yummy drink with it in!
Saw a stunning sunset, which is one of my fave things.

Double check the important things, but know that even if things do go wrong, you’ve got it! You’ll work out what to do.

Tied in nicely with the next part of my trip in Taiwan… next episode...

Remember, everything works out in the end!

36: Where should you travel as a solo female traveller?

October 11, 2018

In today's episode I answer a question from Kat, a listener of the show and I share my recommendations on where to travel as a solo female traveller.

Kat's question was;

‘Hey Jo!! Hope you had a good trip to Japan!! Have you done quite a bit of traveling on your own and where would you recommend travelling to? I have a real travel bug for it at the moment?'

Also, Gal Pal Academy's Travel Planning Bootcamp course is coming soon - details to follow...

My goal is to have you gals inspired and empowered to book your own travel and go travelling.

Task to find out where you want to travel;

Really important that you figure this out for yourself
My tips and advice to help you figure it out;
Take time out to figure out where you’ve always wanted to go and why
Eg. I always wanted to go to Japan because I wanted to try sushi and I wanted to step into the future

What have you always wanted to do?
Pick one thing that you’ve always wanted to see, do or experience.
Then together we will build up your picture from there
What sort of scenery do you enjoy? What do you like being around?
Eg. I love the mountain scenery and the sunset

Travelling for the first time as a solo female traveller?
I would recommend Asia and Europe
Travelling for me is like being home…it is my home.
Asia is my favourite continent by far

Time to have fun and be creative and get to daydream and figure out what you could do.

September 4, 2018

Friends you meet when you travel, become your friends for life. Connections happen so quickly and you always find someone to talk to.

I love meeting up with my travelling friends and reminiscing about our backpacking adventures. I've met so many people around the world and have a wide community of travelling guys and gals.

Meeting people when travelling is one of the easiest things to do, and feels very natural.

If you're scared of travelling alone, or are worried about being a solo female traveller.

Listen to this episode.

It'll make you feel so much more confident...

Small talk is by-past really quickly
Best feeling when you become friends with someone and then end up meeting them later on in your travels
Don’t worry about travelling alone, there are so many people travelling you will make friends
Still scared to go alone – join a tour group and then go from there. This is what I did.

My recent trip to Milan:
When I told people I was going there, I didn’t get the best response
One of the fashion capitals of the world
Last stop on my trip of Italy
2 days in Milan
Met up with a gal traveller I’d met in Pisa - Listen to the episode here

Free day

Morning - Tour of Milan city – lasted about 3 hours
- Really good tour, led by a local Milanese man. Learnt about the history in Milan
- Mixed group of people

Afternoon – Walking around Milan solo
- I spent the afternoon walking around the high end fashion stores daydreaming and being absorbed in the fashion
- Absorbing the Italian culture and just relaxing
- Sitting in parks and people watching

- The hostel where I stayed gave free breakfast
- I took fruit, crackers and cake for my lunch
- Evening dinner also included which was pasta and salad, fruit and cake

- I had pre booked and paid for my hostel on a 2 night deal

- I had paid for a metro ticket on a 24 hour deal the day before and therefore included the entire day

Free days allow you to just relax and enjoy being where you are.

Free days are not about short changing people or cutting corners, or cheating people.

28: Don’t plan your travel without having a rest stop

July 24, 2018

So many travellers overlook planning a rest stop. They think they can just travel and travel and not take time out. That's their biggest mistake and how they get travelling so wrong.

Planning a rest stop is one of the best decisions that you'll make. Moving from culture to culture is exciting and thrilling but also overwhelming. It tires you out so quickly and leaves you feeling exhausted.

Having a rest stop in a place that isn't full of tourists or loads of things to do, will enable you to just stop. Relax. Breathe. And catch up with yourself. You'll feel refreshed, revived and ready to take on your next destination.
