This episode is about:

Answering the question 'How to know if travelling is right for you?'
Travelling is right for everyone – Travelling is what you make of it.

Find out your travelling style

My travel style is a short term planner and going with the flow
Since I started travelling, so many and exciting opportunities have come to me

Travel is 100% about self-discovery

I learnt I’m really confident
I learnt that people liked me – this was a really silly belief that I had before I went travelling
I learnt to be really independent – I am the youngest child and was always
When I first went travelling it was so scary. But within a few days I became confident

Finding you style and what makes you feel good and what travelling means to you, that is what travelling is.

Self-discovery starts in the planning stages

Decide what type of traveller you want to be
Know what you like and don’t like
Remember you are on a journey. A journey of self-discovery

My tips on…

What to do on the plane that stops you getting jet lag

Adapt to the time zone that you’re flying too
Eat the foods in relation to the country you are flying to
Change your time as soon as possible to the destination you are flying to

Eat light food the entire journey – I try to avoid carbs or limit the amount I eat
No caffeine
Keep the biscuits / nut / cracker packs to have them later on in the flight
Relax, just chill and rest

I was able to adjust back to my life in the UK very quickly and not suffer from jet lag

39: How making friends in Japan made my trip to Taiwan so much better

November 1, 2018
00:0000:00

Last episode I told you that I discovered just 3 days before flying back from Japan, that I was in the wrong city for my flight home. The city I was supposed to be in was 214 miles away and on the other side of the country.

In this episode I explain, that by making this mistake I ended up having an incredible time in Taiwan - the next part of my trip. I met some amazing travellers that proves...

'You never know who you’re going to meet and how they can change your travel experience'. - My mum.

October 26, 2018
00:0000:00

I’m an experienced traveller and I’m confident in my ability to travel. But this doesn’t mean I get everything right all the time.

I made a massive mistake with booking my return flight home from Japan, and managed to book the wrong airport...the actual airport was 214 miles away!

I had to think on my feet, change my plans to adapt and keep moving forward. But knowing that everything works out in the end is a huge comfort!

Listen now to hear how I managed to rectify my mistake and turn it into a mini adventure and not get stressed out!

My trip to Japan – booked and was flying within a week of making a decision to go

Listen to episode 35 – being spontaneous and travelling to Japan

I had a niggly feeling when planning my trip but ignored it.
When I booked my flights, I accidentally booked the wrong airport returning from Japan
The airport I’d booked wasn’t even in the same area, it was actually 214 miles away (345km)
I didn’t discover my mistake until 3 days before I was leaving the country – luckily for me

Managed to tick some things of my “list” that I had for Japan
Found a fruit that only exists in Japan and had a yummy drink with it in!
Saw a stunning sunset, which is one of my fave things.

Double check the important things, but know that even if things do go wrong, you’ve got it! You’ll work out what to do.

Tied in nicely with the next part of my trip in Taiwan… next episode...

Remember, everything works out in the end!

36: Where should you travel as a solo female traveller?

October 11, 2018
00:0000:00

In today's episode I answer a question from Kat, a listener of the show and I share my recommendations on where to travel as a solo female traveller.

Kat's question was;

‘Hey Jo!! Hope you had a good trip to Japan!! Have you done quite a bit of traveling on your own and where would you recommend travelling to? I have a real travel bug for it at the moment?'

Also, Gal Pal Academy's Travel Planning Bootcamp course is coming soon - details to follow...

My goal is to have you gals inspired and empowered to book your own travel and go travelling.

Task to find out where you want to travel;

Really important that you figure this out for yourself
My tips and advice to help you figure it out;
Take time out to figure out where you’ve always wanted to go and why
Eg. I always wanted to go to Japan because I wanted to try sushi and I wanted to step into the future

What have you always wanted to do?
Pick one thing that you’ve always wanted to see, do or experience.
Then together we will build up your picture from there
What sort of scenery do you enjoy? What do you like being around?
Eg. I love the mountain scenery and the sunset

Travelling for the first time as a solo female traveller?
I would recommend Asia and Europe
Travelling for me is like being home…it is my home.
Asia is my favourite continent by far

Time to have fun and be creative and get to daydream and figure out what you could do.

34: How travelling gets you friends for life

September 4, 2018
00:0000:00

Friends you meet when you travel, become your friends for life. Connections happen so quickly and you always find someone to talk to.

I love meeting up with my travelling friends and reminiscing about our backpacking adventures. I've met so many people around the world and have a wide community of travelling guys and gals.

Meeting people when travelling is one of the easiest things to do, and feels very natural.

If you're scared of travelling alone, or are worried about being a solo female traveller.

Listen to this episode.

It'll make you feel so much more confident...

This travel episode is about ...

How I randomly met my friends like Jo in Melbourne, at a free salsa class
Even persuaded my friend to live with me in Alice Springs in Australia after knowing her for 2-3 months
Chris an acquaintance (friend of a friend) met when I was in Melbourne and now we’re best friends
Small talk is by-past really quickly
Best feeling when you become friends with someone and then end up meeting them later on in your travels
Don’t worry about travelling alone, there are so many people travelling you will make friends
Still scared to go alone – join a tour group and then go from there. This is what I did.

August 14, 2018
00:0000:00

I'm an experienced and confident traveller, and have travelled all over the world. But my biggest fear came true on a recent trip to Italy.

I'd decided to leave booking my weekend accommodation until the last minute and found that all the hostels were fully booked. My biggest fear had come true and I had nowhere to stay that night.

Panic set in and I had to make some quick decisions to get me out of the mess...

Listen now to find out the process I used, when things go really wrong when travelling...

This travel episode is about ...

Travelling from Pisa to Genoa which was my planned stop
Realising that all the hostels in Genoa, Italy were fully booked
Panicking and realising I had to follow a process to get myself sorted
The 'Process' I use when in a difficult situation and things go wrong
Having my plans changed and ending up in La Spezia, Italy

Realising that even as an experienced traveller, things still do not go to plan

When things go wrong, it’s when you really test your natural instincts and learn

One of the fashion capitals of the world
Last stop on my trip of Italy
2 days in Milan

Free day

Morning - Tour of Milan city – lasted about 3 hours
- Really good tour, led by a local Milanese man. Learnt about the history in Milan
- Mixed group of people

Afternoon – Walking around Milan solo
- I spent the afternoon walking around the high end fashion stores daydreaming and being absorbed in the fashion
- Absorbing the Italian culture and just relaxing
- Sitting in parks and people watching

Food
- The hostel where I stayed gave free breakfast
- I took fruit, crackers and cake for my lunch
- Evening dinner also included which was pasta and salad, fruit and cake

Accommodation
- I had pre booked and paid for my hostel on a 2 night deal

Transport
- I had paid for a metro ticket on a 24 hour deal the day before and therefore included the entire day

Free days allow you to just relax and enjoy being where you are.

Free days are not about short changing people or cutting corners, or cheating people.

28: Don’t plan your travel without having a rest stop

July 24, 2018
00:0000:00

So many travellers overlook planning a rest stop. They think they can just travel and travel and not take time out. That's their biggest mistake and how they get travelling so wrong.

Planning a rest stop is one of the best decisions that you'll make. Moving from culture to culture is exciting and thrilling but also overwhelming. It tires you out so quickly and leaves you feeling exhausted.

Having a rest stop in a place that isn't full of tourists or loads of things to do, will enable you to just stop. Relax. Breathe. And catch up with yourself. You'll feel refreshed, revived and ready to take on your next destination.

27: How to choose a wild card destination

July 17, 2018
00:0000:00

Travelling to a completely random and a 'just because' destination, can be one of the best decisions you make. Having a wild card allows you to have freedom and be wowed by everything.

In today's episode, I reveal my 'wild card' destination from my recent travel to Italy and encourage you to choose a wild card place, when planning your travel adventure.

How to choose a wild card destination...

This travel episode is about ...

  • What is a wild card? – somewhere you don’t have planned, maybe not doing that much research, going with the flow
  • Enhance your travelling experience
  • This is what I did with the city Bologna in Italy.
  • I loved it – not the prettiest, not the most interesting in terms of arcthitecture.
  • It is the place to go for food – the home of Italian food.
  • Download your free workbook
  • Just pick somewhere and be really random in your choosing
  • Tip for choosing you wild card: Stop somewhere on the way to your next destination
  • Go somewhere just because, no further explanation is needed.
  • When you don’t really know a place that well, you tend to talk to more people and are open more to suggestions.
  • Use local advice and opinions on the best places to go and see.
  • Best Pasta in Bologna (in my opinion) Pasta Fresca Naldi Bologna

26: Tips for travelling Rome

July 10, 2018
00:0000:00

Are you wanting to travel to Rome and not feel like a tourist? Do you want to get off the beaten track to experience authentic Rome and it's vast history and culture?

In today's episode, I share my tips for travelling around Rome and tops sights not to be missed! I love Italy and it's laid back culture that makes me feel like I'm in a film. This is the first episode from my tour around Italy with more places and stops to come. Listen now...

 Top tips for travelling Italy

This travel episode is about...

1 – Take a good pair of shoes and expect a lot of walking
2 – Take a really good guide book and just explore – leave the map at the hostel. Stumble upon places that have meaning and history. Allow your inner explorer to come alive
3- See the Coloseum later in the day – maybe an hour before it’s due to close. This way you can avoid the crowds and enjoy the attractions better.
4 – Walk around palatine hill in the morning (next to the Coloseum). Walk around the old city in the morning too, to avoid the tourist crowds.
5- Visit the Largo di Torre Argentina in Rome. Its now a cat sanctuary and was the place where Julius Cesar was assassinated.
6 – Read up on Rome before you go – there is so much to see
7- See Piazza del Popolo and let your imagination run wild.
8 – See Vatican city but make sure you buy your ticket in advance online.
9 – Be more aware of your surroundings. Rome was the only place where I was approached by male strangers.
10 – The food in Rome was not my favourite from my trip around Italy, but instead the best food was in Bologna and Florence.
